Len was trained at the Alabama Institute of Aeronautics, Tuscaloosa, USA

Following pilot training in the USA, Len was posted to No. 9 OTU, 171 squadron and then 239 squadron

Captured by the Germans, Len spent two and a half years as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 3

Formative Years

Len Bennett was a day student at St Peter’s School, York. The school was founded in 647 AD and is the fourth oldest school in the world. Its former students include Guy Fawkes and England Cricketer Norman Yardley

A famous relative

Len’s role model, as he grew up, was his uncle, Joe Hulme. Joe was his mother’s brother andĀ  had become a professional footballer playing for Blackburn, Huddersfield and Herbert Chapman’s all-conquering Arsenal team of the 1930’s
